Post #37: The Godot Vision Statement

The Godot Foundation recently published a new article: Vision for the Engine.

I wanted to briefly say that I love so many things about their vision statement. Here are a few highlights with my thoughts...

"Everyone gets the same engine for the same low-low price of free."

This is hard to hold to, especially when writing good software costs real life money. They've stuck to this, and I don't see that changing. It has, and will continue to, completely transform the future generations of indie game developers and the engine they choose. Similar to Blender, I think it won't be long before Godot is the only sane choice for most indie game developers that want to make their own games using an existing engine. (I think we are pretty close to that already.)

"Godot wants to be the best tool available for small to medium-size teams to ship professional-quality games."

Similar to other quotes, like this one, "A smaller, solid engine is better than a large, brittle one.", this quote proves their focus is in the right place. Trying to build something for teams larger than medium size is an insanely expensive, arduous task that most likely will be done very very poorly. Games are too hard and complicated at that scale for there to be a good general purpose engine. (If some billionaire wants to change that, let me know, it'll be very expensive.)

"Godot aims to be usable by as many people as possible. This means small binaries, easy setup, support for multiple languages, and first-class support for assistive technologies like screen readers."

I could keep quoting their entire doc, but I'll end on this one. An easy to use tool, that is small and focused, and provides an ecosystem that is not only inclusive for the developers but also for the audience playing the games ... this is a no brainer way to make a good engine. Applause all around for the Godot Foundation on this one.
