Hello, world!
I have always been hesitant to write in public. I don't think I'm a great writer, and it makes me nervous to put time into something that others may consider worthless. Even though I don't want to write for others, the fear remains, and nothing ends up happening.
Well, today is the start of something new. I'm starting a journey of building in public. While it may seem that I'm sidestepping my fear by being anonymous, I'm still apprehensive, and worry that I will put much time and work into something that fails. However, I've waited long enough. At the minimum, I hope this will be something I can look back on and be proud of, no matter if I'm alone on the journey.
What is this journey, then? Well, maybe I should introduce myself. I'm an experienced software engineer who has decided (seemingly like many others, during this tumultuous time) to start something on my own. While I have a lot of ideas, for now, I've chosen probably the hardest (read: stupidest) thing one can choose: indie games. This journey will start with me learning game development. I've made small games before, in various languages and tools, but this is something much more serious. I hope to release a game someday soon, but for now, I'll moonlight as an aspiring indie game developer. If that fails, I'm happy to switch to something else, that will also be built in public. Or I'll take a break. Who knows?
There is much more to say, but a few important points must be made:
- On Posts: Posts (what this is) will usually be smaller bits of writing, pictures, or video that contain something I've learned. I'll also post these to social media, as I am trying to one day make a game, but please know this website will be the source of truth. I hope this is helpful and not annoying to any readers! (I would eventually like to have a Writing page, where I post longer thoughts and essays, but I'm starting small.)
- On Bear: I've been following many different blogs for many years. When I came across Bear for the first time, I knew it was something I wanted to try. I absolutely love what Herman has done so far, and I'm very happy with The Bear Manifesto. Thanks Herman! (I don't know Herman and I highly doubt Herman will see this, but if so, thanks for what you've built!)
- On AI: If it's not obvious, this post is much longer than I thought it would end up being. It's also taken me much longer to write than expected, because it's being done by hand. I hope my game is also beautiful, handcrafted, and free from AI... but that it's built faster than expected!
- Contact Me: I would be very happy if you want to write. Right now the best way is through email, or through social media (I still shudder a bit at that second one). Please feel free to send an email to a very common five letter greeting (hint, the first word at the start of this post) at this domain dot com.
If you're still reading up to this point, thank you! I'd love to read what you've written; please send an email and say hi. For now, I'll leave you with one of my favorite songs, "Dare You To Move" by Switchfoot (click on the photo!).
